Ahmet Güneştekin

Batman, Türkiye, 1966

Ahmet Güneştekin’s abstract and conceptual works, spanning a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, video, and installation, address the politics of memory, languages of oppression, and forms of resistance through intricate structures and forms. Characterized by the unexpected use of formal and visual elements, his compositions feature layers of meaning to suggest alternative modes of seeing. Early childhood experiences with dengbêjs sonic spheres influenced his understanding of translating and incorporating mythologies into his works. Over a decade of ethnographic research, he has delved into language and oral culture, tracing his childhood images and voices as a memory space. In his first atelier in Beyoğlu, he discovered an artistic language that deviates from the conventional relationship between material and form, borrowing from mythologies. His exhibition Encounter earned him recognition in the Istanbul art scene in 2012, and a year later, he was introduced to international audiences in Venice with his video installations that were acts of counter-memory through forms of artistic recollection.

The artist’s multi-layered works reflect how personal and collective memory is constructed and influenced by cultural images through natural and processed materials. His use of mythological elements coalesces with his treatment of objects, combining materials with optical illusions, geometric abstractions, and color gradients. Recently, he began sculpting circular structures with mythological components, using stone formations and metal to create depth and volume in space. Through a multidisciplinary, synchronic, and diachronic study, the artist’s exhibitions open new possibilities for discovering past events from the perspective of alterity. Among the museums and galleries where the artist’s works are exhibited outside his home country are Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien, Kunsthalle Brennabor, Rosenhang Museum, Kunsthalle Dresden, Vasarely Museum, Janus Pannonius Museum, Zsolnay Museum, Marlborough Gallery, Galerie Michael Schultz, and Mark Peet Visser Gallery. Ahmet Güneştekin has acquired Palazzo Gradenigo, one of the magnificent palaces in Venice that witnessed centuries of elegance and refinement with its design. The artist-led institution, Güneştekin Art Refinery, will operate in the palace, which bears the typical features of Venetian architecture with valuable frescoes by eighteenth-century painters. Palazzo Gradenigo has been permitted for exhibitions and art events by museums, galleries, and other art institutions. The palace, with a glorious past blending old and new styles, is also one of the main exhibition spaces of the Venice Biennale. Güneştekin Art Refinery, supported by the Güneştekin Foundation, will carry out its operations in this palace, aiming to enhance cultural dialogue and support young artists in their endeavors.
