MY FAIRY TALE

Everything you look at can become a fairy tale, and you can get a story from everything you touch… — H.C. Andersen

My Fairy Tale brings together contemporary artists from Turkey and abroad to depict the "fairy tale" as a metaphor for personal, social, and political landscapes.

The art of storytelling is a fundamental human skill that sets us apart from other living beings, forming the foundation of our communicative nature. Storytelling is a creative trait of humans, much like the visual arts, which also serve as a way of conveying a story, but in a visual form.

Within this narrative space, fairy tales hold a special place—stories infused with dreams, symbolism, and deep metaphorical meaning. They create fantasy worlds that allow us to both rethink reality and uncover universal truths.

Fairy tales may violate social norms and life patterns, but they often disguise themselves with phrases like "Once upon a time" to distance themselves from direct political critique. They may exaggerate and hyperbolize reality, sometimes mocking social issues, or distort the truth by adding fantastical assumptions.

These blurred lines between fiction and reality echo the modern era’s distortion of reality in social media or mass media. Just like fairy tales, social networks construct reality according to the visions and desires of their creators, shaping an illusory world that influences the audience’s perception and imagination.

The My Fairy Tale exhibition presents the stories of 8 artists, where their methods of narration and expression take form through their works. Transforming the gallery into a surreal, magical kingdom, the artists sought to highlight the contradictions of modern society. In their seemingly fairy-tale works, the artists reflect on themes such as political instability and societal standards.
